Duck Egg Marble Planter Pot - Mini

$26.90 NZD

If you haven't heard the hype about Jesmonite yet, prepare for your new obsession. A favourite of artists and awarded of 'Material of the Year' at the London Design Fair. Once you look up the hashtag you'll be mesmerised by the gorgeous homewares being made from this impressive, eco-friendly material.

Jesmonite is also used in Musuems and by Architects with two notable projects include Legoland, and the London Zoo, who used Jesmonite to build their new lion enclosure. From the jungle, to your indoor jungle, Jesmonite has many ways it can be used.

The Marble Collection

This first collection features one of my favourite Jesmonite techniques, marble. The nature of the marble technique makes every piece entirely unique. Each one of one. Perfectly imperfect, with unique imperfections you'd expect from handmade items made from natural materials.

Every pot is one of a kind. No two will ever be the same, as the marble technique means your exact pot can never be replicated or produced again. The unique shades and patterns of marbling and swirls make each beautifully different

Duck Egg Marble

All photos are of the
same pot, showing the different sides of this beautiful piece. The base colour is two shades of a gorgeous Duck Egg Blue, almost turquoise. If you look closely in the photos you'll see a swirled layer of a lighter with slightly darker turquoise. Subtle, light marbling, swirls and ripples of white feature throughout. Being hand-made from a naturally sourced product, please allow for some imperfections and blemishes. This piece has been triple sealed with protective Jesmonite stone sealant (see more about the process under 'How is it made?' below)

What size is the mini?

This piece measures just under 8cm wide x 8cm tall on the outside, and just under 6.5cm wide x 7.5cm tall on the inside. The perfect mini size for succulents and cacti, string of pearls, string of turtles, chain of hearts, pink bubbles, and all your baby houseplants. Includes drainage hole, so you can plant directly into your new pot, or plant into a mini nursery pot and put that inside. This size fits the Round Crew Mini Nursery Pots in Black or White.

What is Jesmonite?

Jesmonite is made from a natural mineral called Gypsum. It's eco-friendly, non-toxic, and sustainable. Although it looks delicate, it's surprisingly strong, and feels almost like marble. Smooth and like stone to the touch. Heavier than you’d think.

How is it made?

Different artists vary in their technique. This is the technique used to create our Jesmonite pots. Each finished Jesmonite pot requires a 4 stage process over 2 days. Each is hand-made individually.

The 4 stages start with Pigment and Mix. This 1st stage requires genuine Jesmonite pigment and an exact ratio of Jesmonite mineral to water-based resin. Once the perfect pigment colour's been blended, it's added to the resin. The mineral and resin are then combined, and hand-mixed to a silky, smooth consistency, ready for stage 2.

The 2nd stage is Pour and Reveal, which takes 30 minutes and a little magic. At the very last moment before the pour, just the smallest amount of pigment is added to start the marble effect. The liquid is then carefully hand-poured into the mould, and the marbling appears, but remains hidden inside the mould for another 30 minutes until the reveal. After 30 minutes, and a little heat, the Jesmonite transforms from a liquid to a solid, and the rough pot can be removed from the mould.

Patience is required here. The 3rd stage is Cure and Polish. A further 24 hours is required before the rough pot has fully cured. On the second day, the Polish stage can start. At least 3 stages of sanding and polishing begin. The rough pot is polished and buffed by hand, until a silky, smooth finish is achieved, ready for stage 4.

The 4th stage puts the finishing touch on your piece. 2 layers of protective stone sealant are added, inside and out. This final invisible layer protects from UV light, and creates a splash-proof, water resistant layer (as like stone, clay and marble, Jesmonite is naturally porous). The bottom is then waterproofed using a clear sealant, and your pot is ready to go to its new home at your place.
