The Mushroom Water Meter might just be the most worry-free water meter ever invented. This little cutie actually lights up to tell you when it's time to water. Monitoring your jungle's health just went next level.

Wonderful for worried plant parents who don't want to over-water. Whether you're new to the hobby and still learning the art of when to water, or an experienced plant parent with a collection so big you can't possibly be running around lifting pots and sticking fingers in everywhere, but don't want to discover a dried out husk where a wish-list plant used to be.

Plus I love that it's dual-purpose. You can use it in manual mode and spot-check your entire jungle, or leave it planted in your most worrisome wish-list plants in auto mode.

How do you use it?

1. Wake it up

Your meter arrives in sleep mode. Press and hold the sensor button for 3 seconds to put it in active mode. Once 'awake' it will flash red and green 3 times.

2. Plant it

Push the probe in to the soil. Make sure to push it in holding the probe itself, not the mushroom. Push down to the level you want to monitor the water level at. Higher for moisture lovers, deeper for dry. The scale goes from 1 to 7. 1 for plants that prefer their substrate moist. 7 for plants that like it dry. The deeper you place the probe the further down it will monitor the moisture level. Please note this is a guide only:

Depth 1 to 3: Plants that prefer soil that stays moist, eg: Ferns, Peace Lily.

Depth 3 to 5
: For most indoor plants that like soil lightly moist to borderline dry before being watered again, eg: Philodendron, Monstera.

Depth 5 to 7
: For plants from naturally more arid habitats that prefer it dry, eg: Sansevieria, Aloe Vera, Aspidistra.

3. Sleep

When not in use, return to sleep mode to save battery use. Press and hold the sensor button for 3 seconds. The top will flash red and green 3 times, then turn off.

What do the lights mean?

When all is well and the substrate is moist at the depth you chose, the meter will flash green once every 30 minutes - or spot-check with a single push of the sensor, and the top of the mushroom will flash green.

The top of the mushroom will flash yellow 3 times when it's time to water. Yellow means the substrate is dry and ready to water.

Definitely time to water, right now (unless you want it dry of course). Left in a plant, in auto mode the top will light up red every 6 seconds until watered. You can also use it in manual mode and pop it in any plant you want to spot check, push the sensor and it will flash red if dry.

How bright are the lights?

I find the lights hard to see at bright times of day, so I just look for the red flashing light early morning or evening when it's darker. Then it's very hard to miss! If you want to check during the day, just cup your hand or shift a leaf for a little shade. It's just gone 6pm in the middle of December as I write this and I can see the red light perfectly fine flashing in my Philodendron Neon (shown in the photos), which reminds me, it's time to water!

What size is it?

Total length 15.5cms long. Probe 11cm long x 7mm wide x 1mm deep and top 4.5cm tall x 2.5cms wide

Can you change the batteries?

Yes! I've been using mine coming up 3 months and haven't had to change the batteries yet, but you can. Unscrew the back. Needs two 1.5 volt button batteries (model AG13, SR44, LR44, EPX76 or 357/303). Batteries last longer if you water when you first see the meter flashing red. Leaving a plant in dry mode (flashing red every 6 seconds until watered), drains the batteries faster than normal.

*Please note this is best bought for your own jungle rather than as a gift due to the packaging. With the fancy retail packaging the price was a lot higher, so I opted for the plain box to help keep the price down*

" has kept me from overwatering my houseplants and killing them. The push-to-read function is why I have purchased this item several times over - every time I add a houseplant, I reorder one of these. And the batteries are easy to replace, so for those that complain its dead after a few months, it's just like every other battery operated device, you have to change the batteries!" Kelley

"I notoriously kill indoor plants by over watering. I absolutely love these. I've bought 6 so far with no issues. The flashing isn't really noticeable when the plants are well watered however, you can definitely see it when it starts to flash red. I like that you can check the moisture level any time you want by pushing the button. I have sand on top of most of my indoor plants to ward off fungus gnats so its nice not having disturb that to check the dirt." E.Brogs

"The slim stick slides in easily & the ruler measurements are so helpful for me to know the proper depth to test at. I purposely let my plant sit for a few days to monitor the light change... it did finally start flashing red at me after a week so I realised I’ve probably been overwatering." Amy
