"It's my first time buying a grow light and so I was a bit nervous. But the bulb fit perfectly into my lamp with no issues, and provides some great directional light for my propagations. Great first time grow light experience!"

How far away from my plants should this grow light be?

Distance guide for the 10 watt

75cms to 1.5 metres distance for seedlings, cuttings and foliage growth when small.

45cms to 75cms for higher-light requirements and once plants are established.

The above guide is based on this bulb being your only light source. Always start at the furthest distance in the range and adjust from there according to your plant.

Closer if your plants are high-light or direct sun plants, or if growth is slow or leggy, or further away if leaves look to be getting too much light, such as fading or scorching. If you don't know your plant's light requirements, check this guide > Plant species light guide

Which wattage Sansi bulb should you get?

Sansi 36 watt

For a bigger houeplant collection, to cover a larger area, to mount higher up / further away, for wider coverage and for large plant shelves. The best choice for direct-sun loving plants, and those that like very bright, indirect light.

The better choice for a small room or small greenhouse up to a large grow tent or for a collection of plants that prefer very bright or direct sun, including succulents and cacti, small trees, for fruit production, and for large, established plants.

Coverage area is wider and output is more intense, so the 36 watt Sansi can also go higher up / further away than lower wattage Sansi bulbs. The extra bank of lights in the centre compared to the 24 watt offers higher light intensity.

Sansi 24 watt

The best seller and most popular wattage for a medium-size indoor plant collection, to cover a medium to large plant shelf, for a small size room, or if you want two lights to avoid plants growing towards one direction only.

Watch the video below which shows the 24 watt. One or two 24 watts are the most popular choice for most houseplant hobbyists (you can always start with one and get a second later).

Sansi 15 watt

One or two 15 watt bulbs are ideal for smaller plant collections, to cover a small to medium plant shelf, for using over a propagation tank, over seedling trays or a collection of cuttings, and for use inside small grow tents.

Between the 15 watt and 10 watt, the 15 watt is the more popular of the two but the 10 watt fits more lamps without needing as wide or long a shade as the 15 watt.

Sansi 10 watt

The better choice when you need to mount the light closer to plants (such as over the top to cover a tray of seedlings or to light up one plant shelf), or for a smaller number of plants such lighting up as a windowsill or table-top.

The 10 watt also fits the largest range of lamps. It has the same standard E27 screw-in fitting as all Sansi bulbs, but is not as wide or long as the 15 watt, so less conspicuous if you want a more aesthetic solution than can be hidden within most shades.

What light fittings and lamps can a Sansi bulb go in?

Sansi bulbs have a standard NZ E27 screw-in fitting, making them compatible with most desk lamps and floor lamps, or get these pendant cord kits if you want to hang your bulb from the ceiling (without getting an electrician in).

However, Sansi grow light bulbs do have wider and longer bulbs than standard indoor lightbulbs, so if you want a shade, look for one that's a bit longer and wider than standard, or is removable. As Sansi grow lights are directional, a shade isn't required (see the video below showing the beam without a shade).

Although LED grow lights run cooler so don't have the same risk of burning your plants, they still MUST have some airflow around the bulb, so I'd allow a good 3cms or so extra on all sides.

That means you may need either no shade (recommended for 24 watt and 36 watt bulbs), or a wider than usual shade in an area that also has good airflow, so things don't get too hot, which risks burning out your bulb.

Have a watch of the video below for an idea of size as the 24 watt (in the video) and 36 watt are a similar larger size, whereas the 15 watt and 10 watt are small enough to fit with plenty of room around them in most lamps with shades. The 10 watt is a similar size to a larger round light household bulb.

I personally suggest buying your bulb BEFORE your lamp, so you can take your bulb shopping with you to check the fit in-store - or to just purchase from a store who is relaxed about change of mind returns if you find it doesn't fit - and keep your receipt!

If you prefer to hang it either from the ceiling or from an L bracket on the wall, I also have these pendant cord kits available that have E27 fittings, plug into a standard NZ wall socket, and are rated for up to 60 watt bulbs so are compatible with ALL Sansi bulbs.

To get a better idea of the bulb size, brightness and distance from plants, have a watch of this video which uses the 24 watt size:

Included: Bulb in box as shown. Pendant cords or other accessories shown are not included (available separately).

More about the warranty

Sansi says their LEDs are rated to run for up to 50,000 hours in theory, BUT that is based on perfect conditions, not the changeable conditions in our homes. Factors like heat, moisture, airflow and more can have a big impact on how long a bulb will last. A more realistic expectation of lifetime would be 1 to 2 years.

As you can tell from the price, Sansi are great value-for-money for an entry-level solution to boost light levels for houseplants grown indoors, but are not a high-end, premium solution.

In my own use at home I find even at 2 years my Sansi bulbs usually still still work but slowly become dimmer over time (called lumen degradation, normal for all LEDs).

Even with the lower price and more realistic 1 to 2 years, I still provide a 12 month warranty on all the lights I sell here at Love That Leaf (including Sansi bulbs), which covers manufacturing faults and defects.

It doesn't cover wear and tear, accidents or faults caused by conditions. It does cover most things you did not cause and could not have prevented, whether on purpose or by accident, for home use and only within NZ. The Consumer Guarantees Act also applies.
