CUP O FLORA Glass Self Watering Pot - Small RETRO (3 colours)
This beautiful self-watering pot is the Cup O Flora. As pretty as it is practical. Gives everyone a 'green thumb' by doing the watering for you. This is the Small Ribbed with its charming retro style. Choose your colour: Available in your choice of inner pot colour: Clear, Blue or Amber. Clear and Amber are see-through. blue is opaque.
Award-winning design
This beautifully simple self-watering system makes it easy to monitor your plant's root health and moisture level. Popular for African Violets, Syngonium, Begonia, Peace Lilies, Spider Plants, Pothos and a long list of other baby houseplants, ferns, lucky bamboo, palms and many more.
No more constant water-level checks like non see-through self-watering pots. No panic-stations when you realise you entirely forgot to water a plant and it's suddenly on death's door. No over-watering either. Cup O Flora also makes a gorgeous gift, especially if given already planted. Even better if it's with a baby plants you grew yourself!
Made of Borosilicate glass
Saved for special vessels - like the 'bubble' Bodum glasses - Borosilicate glass has very high thermal shock fracture resistance. Most glass in the world is soda-lime. That's the cheap stuff that everything from fizzy-drink bottles to windows are made of.
Borosilicate glass handles more extreme temperatures, and sudden temperature changes, better than soda-lime. It's so resistant to chemicals - stopping them leaching into the glass - it's used for contamination prevention in lab equipment.
That means your new Cup O Flora can handle going from sitting in hot, direct sunlight, to having fresh cold water poured in, and fertiliser and minerals from your tap water won't leach in to the glass over time. Better for your plants. Longer lifetime for you.
What's in the box?
Cup O Flora comes in a beautiful printed box that makes a lovely gift. Inside you'll find a set of two glass pots (one inner, one outer), and the wick.
The outer pot holds the water. The removable inner pot holds the plant and substrate. The inner pot has a small hole in the bottom, which the wick goes through. The wick (included) is silk ribbon, which can (and should) be replaced over time. You can use other wick materials instead, just make sure they have high enough absorbency. A little pack of ribbon from Spotlight or the supermarket will do the job nicely.
*Please note plants shown are not included*
How big is the Small?
The outer pot measures 8.6cms tall x 11.2cms wide, and inner pot measures 6.2cms tall x 5.6cms wide. Outer holds 550mls of water. Inner holds 150mls.
What substrate can you use?
Use your Cup O Flora with potting mix (such as this blend made for wick-watering), leca, fern fibre, starter mix or a good indoor plant blend for the babies... any substrate that fits and matches your plant's needs. A good general choice is a smaller grade, free-draining mix that provides a balance of water absorption for moisture, and drainage for oxygen.
How do you use Cup O Flora?
STEP ONE
Thread the wick (supplied), through the hole in the bottom of the inner pot so half the wick is in the pot, and half out.
STEP TWO
Add your substrate and plant into the inner pot.
STEP THREE
Add about 2cms of water to the bottom of the outer pot. Then put your inner pot inside (double-checking the wick is in the water).
Tip: The little rubber ring can be discarded, it's just there to keep the inner and outer pot safe during transit.
Maintain the water level at about 2cms, below the bottom of the inner pot. Top up with fresh water when the level gets low. Ideally tip-out old water and replace with new water. I recommend adding a little liquid fertiliser in the water also. Choose one made for hydro or semi-hydro.
How high should the water be?
The water level should be slightly below the bottom of the inner pot, so substrate and roots don't get 'wet feet'. That's about 2cms or so of water.
How does wick watering work?
Roots absorb water from the substrate. As the substrate dries, it replenishes water through the wick, from the water reservoir in the outer pot. For a plant that might normally dry out in less than a week, Cup O Flora tends to more than double that time, requiring topping up every 2 to 3 weeks instead, saving you time and worry. There's no exact amount of time though, as plant, substrate, airflow, temperature and light all factor in to how fast a plant uses up water. Wick watering is great for inconsistent schedules, frequent travellers, and those with busy lives (um, so everyone?), and when you have to leave your plants in someone else's care, but don't want well-meaning housemates to over-water.
Reviews
"I started my collection of African Violets when lockdown began. As the collection grew the watering process became tedious. I’ve repotted few of my plants and they look absolutely divine. What a joy! Thank you very much for the functional yet elegant design." Marina Preman
"It is so easy to keep my houseplants well watered now. And they are very pretty pots. Love them!" Julie Johnson Bradbury
