Perlite is the perfect addition for creating a free draining mix for your indoor plants. Use perlite by itself for hydroponics or semi-hydro, superb for propagation of cuttings or seeds, or mix it with soil and other substrates to make a more free-draining, custom mix with plenty of air space for your plants, reducing the risk of root rot. Popular mixed 50/50 with Stratum (aqua soil) for both mature and alocasia corms, and for hard-to-root cuttings.

Bag size and perlite size

One bag of Egmont Perlite holds 5 litres and measures about 35cm long x 16cm wide x 10cm deep. The perlite itself measures roughly 1mm to 4mm long by about 2mm thick. There's a fair bit of variety in the size range as it's a natural product but this is the standard size perlite you'll often see used by planty YouTubers. If you're wanting something chunkier, have a look at the Bio Leaf Coarse or Super Chunky Perlite instead.

How much water does perlite hold?

How big the perlite is changes how much water it holds and how well it drains:

Used by itself, an EXTRA-FINE perlite drains slower and increase water hold capacity to about 60%+

FINE perlite has normal to slow drainage and around a 40%+ water holding capacity.

MEDIUM perlite offer faster drainage and lower water holding, around 30%+

COARSE or CHUNKY is very fast to drain and has the lowest water holding capacity, around 20%+

This Egmont Perlite is around fine to medium in size. Bio Leaf Coarse Perlite is around medium to coarse. Bio Leaf Chunky Perlite is up at the coarse to chunky range.

Why choose to buy from Love That Leaf?

100% NZ

Hi! I'm Anna, the owner of Love That Leaf. When you buy from me you're supporting a local, family business (and fellow houseplant hobbyist). Love That Leaf is a registered NZ business and is 100% NZ owned and operated. Orders ship daily, Monday to Friday, from Auckland. Usual delivery is 1 to 3 working days NZ wide.

I'LL PUT IT RIGHT

I stand by everything I sell. I'll always help if something goes wrong. When you choose to buy from a registered NZ business (like me), you're also covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act, unlike overseas purchases or private sales where you might end up stuck with no rights if anything arrives damaged or stops working.

SUPER SUPPORT

I'm here for support and advice anytime, even if you haven't bought from me yet. A lot of lovely people helped me along my plant journey, and I want to pay it forward. Please don't hesitate to ask for help. No obligation at all to purchase.

5 YEARS

I started Love That Leaf in August 2020,  currently have over 2,000 independent, verified 5 star reviews and have sent over 30,000 orders to houseplant hobbyists NZ-wide. Thank you for your support!
