Reviews for Dyna-Gro BLOOM
"Works like a charm. Buds are just forming, waiting for them to flower! I use the instructed amount. Certainly a very small amount but it packs a big punch."
“This is the best plant food I have ever used. My African Violets went crazy after one feeding. They are blooming like crazy, even one that has never bloomed before. Dyna-Gro is amazing!"
"Simply amazing products! We have tested Dyna-Gro up against 7 different brands so far and Dyna-Gro Grow and Bloom ALWAYS seems to come out on top! We have since switched to ALL Dyna-Gro products for our hydroponic systems.” BioMatrixSystems
"Thank you for another summer of hibiscus plants with huge blooms and deep green glossy leaves! Your products are just over the top and really deliver!"
"I really wish I took a photo of my plant before I tried this. This stuff came and I didn’t have any buds. Within 2 weeks it has many buds and I am amazed. Soo easy to use and a little goes a long way!!!." @lb_rice
Which plants is BLOOM formulated for?
Dyna-Gro BLOOM is for all plants that flower, produce fruit or vegetables. That's your Orchids, Hoyas, African Violets, Gardenia, Geranium, Begonias, Roses, Tulips, Peace Lily, Lilies, Cyclamen, Azalea, Bougainvillea, Hibiscus and more. It's especially popular with Orchids, Hoya, Tomatoes, African Violets and Roses.
Should I use Dyna-Gro GROW or BLOOM?
Good question, as they actually work best together, but there are 2 general approaches to fertiliser.
At first many of us are 'one food, all year round' feeders, and many stay happily at that level. For you guys, I'd go with Dyna-Gro GROW for your flowering jungle members, all year round. Happy, healthy plants. Job done.
The other group are hobbyists who look after your plants to match their needs and the season, so you'll tend to have a collection of foods and supplements in the cupboard to mix and match, changing what you feed, or mix-feed to suit. In general, you split your seasons in two, vegetative and blooming. For you I'd follow the seasonal guide below.
PS: You 100% can just use GROW or BLOOM all year-round for feeding flowering plants - so much better than no food at all - but for best results I'd recommend matching your food to what your plants are up to at different times of year. See the seasonal guide below.
BLOOM is specifically formulated to be used during the bud to flowering stage of a plants life cycle, so for best results start using BLOOM before your plants decide to shift into the flowering phase. If you're unsure when that is, swap to BLOOM at the first sign of buds forming.
GROWING SEASON: When your flowering plant is in foliage not flower mode, go for GROW.
BEFORE FLOWERING: Now's the time you want to focus your plant's energy away from foliage and on to flowering. About 6 months before flowering, a plant initiates bud formation. Before buds appear, now's the time to shift from GROW to BLOOM (or if feeding something else, swap to BLOOM now).
FLOWERING: Go for BLOOM throughout flowering (same for plants during fruit and vegetable production). Stay on BLOOM until flowering / fruiting / food production has finished. Then shift back to GROW for the rest of the year. Job done.
What about leafy veges? For leafy veges like lettuce, kale and spinach, you want higher-nitrogen levels, so go for Dyna-Gro Foliage Pro for them.
Why feed BLOOM?
Like Dyna-Gro's Foliage Pro and GROW, Dyna-Gro BLOOM is a complete and balanced food. It's also urea free, so safe for potted, container and indoor plants to avoid mineral salt build-up and fertiliser burn. It also includes the all-important elusive calcium, so you don't have to supplement separately.
What's different about BLOOM compared to Dyna-Gro's other two complete foods, is the low nitrogen, high phosphorus formula. The NPK ratio is 3-12-6 (the 3 is Nitrogen and the 12 is Phosphorus). Compare that to GROW which is 7-9-5 and Foliage Pro which is 9-3-6.
BLOOM's ratio focuses your plant's energy on flowers, fruit and vegetable production - away from stems and leaves - avoiding long, leggy, stretching stems and helping your plant's produce big, healthy, long-lasting blooms. You can keep feeding BLOOM all year round, or you can swap back to GROW after flowering finishes until bud formation starts again next year.
Keep in mind no food can force your plant to flower! That's caused by the age of the plant, light, temperature and other factors we don't have total control of in most home environments. However too much nitrogen, or a lack of phosphorus, can reduce bud and flower production.
What about leafy veges? Leafy veges like lettuce and spinach should be treated like leaves (doh) - and feed a higher-nitrogen foliage food, like Foliage Pro not BLOOM.
Why is Dyna-Gro different?
If you're already clued-up on the Dyna-Gro difference, scroll down for the directions for use below this section.
COMPLETE > All 16 essential macro and micro-nutrients indoor plants need are included in Dyna-Gro GROW, Foliage-Pro and BLOOM. A truly complete plant food. Not just an 'NPK' food.
BALANCED > Nutrients are in the right balance to avoid both deficiencies and excesses. Prevents excess, unabsorbed mineral salts building-up in soil. That build-up can steal precious water from your plants, cause browning, wilting leaves, leaf loss and slow growth (check for white build-up on soil surface & around drainage holes too).
NO UREA > It's urea free like all Dyna-Gro products. This one's a biggie. Urea is what most (usually cheaper), fertilisers use as their nitrogen source. Fine for outdoors, where excess can leach away from precious roots. But for indoor plants? No thank you. Urea can turn soil pH acidic, cause root and leaf burn.
CALCIUM! Most plant foods lack calcium at all, or levels are too low. Calcium can't move around your plant, so if there's a deficiency when growing new leaves and stems, there's a deficiency for life (sad face). If you've noticed stunted growth, deformed leaves, weak stems, new growth rotting, black spots or yellow leaf edges, those are common signs of a calcium deficiency. Plants need 1 to 3 times more calcium than phosphorus! Yes, Dyna-Gro BLOOM includes calcium.
BLOOM directions for use
Like most plant foods, dose varies based on plant requirements and frequency.
For feeding every time you water for the majority of plants: 1ml per 1.5 litres is a popular maintenance level.
In winter, for slow-growers, or light-feeders drop down to 1ml per 3 litres. For very fast growers and heavy feeders, you can adjust your dose to 1ml per 1 litre.
I use the 1ml per 1.5 litre dose every time I water with Dyna-Gro for most of my jungle, and for my lighter feeders - like African Violets and Hoya - I go for the 1ml per 3 litres dose.
Used at general maintenance level, the 310ml size makes over 465 litres. Superb value for money.
