One of the newest blends in the Bio Leaf range, Vertical Grow Pole Mix gives aerial roots the same customised support as soil roots. The perfect match for filling moss poles like Grow Vertical, Canopy, Thiccly and more. Lower maintenance than the traditional spag moss filler. A lovely light, chunky blend to create the ideal conditions for climbing houseplants to take hold on and climb, supporting bigger, healthier growth.
PS: Need LOTS of potting mix? Orders over 15 litres total sometimes get too big or heavy for standard shipping rates. If your order goes over into overweight / oversize rates I will be in touch to let you know. I won't incur any costs without your okay - Anna
Which plants is this mix for?
All your climbing plants including Monstera, Anthurium, Epipremnum, Philodendrons, Pothos and other epiphytic plants that grow up trees in their natural habitat. Without offering them something to climb and get their aerial roots into, many of these climbers never reach their full potential.
Which poles is this mix best used with?
All your fillable moss poles including Canopy, Grow Vertical, Thiccly and similar.
How much is needed to fill a pole?
A medium pole (around 40cms tall), will need around 1.5 litres of grow pole blend. That's if you fill the pole to the top. There's also the method where you fill the pole only to the current height of the plant, and top the pole up with more substrate as your plant grows taller.
2 litres will usually fill 1 to 2 medium grow poles, and 5 litres fills 3 to 4 medium grow poles. How firmly you pack it in, how high you fill the pole, and the width of the pole can all increase how much you'll need so this is just a guide. There's no harm in getting more than you need just in case. You can also use the extra mixed in with your potting mix.
What's in the bag?
Lots! Lucky roots. A light, fibrous mix of orchid bark, chunky perlite, coir chips, charcoal, long strand spagmoss and fern fibre.
Orchid Bark
Bio Leaf uses a more premium, export-quality grade of orchid bark that's cleaner and sterile. Making it harder and slower to decompose than standard orchid bark. Lasting many years longer than other bark sources that are softer and break down faster. Orchid bark increases air in the pole, keeps space for roots, adds drainage while holding water for slow-release between watering.
Chunky Perlite
A nice big, chunky grade of perlite adds air and increases drainage, also reducing weight to reduce tall poles tipping, and keeps excess water from sitting in the pole by increasing pockets of air, reducing the risk of root and stem rot along with reducing the risk of growing mould.
Coco Coir Chips
Sourced from coconut husks, fibrous coco chips hold a good amount of moisture balanced with creating pockets of air for root health. Coco chips offer more fibre and higher water retention than orchid bark chips. Roots love the fibres! Holds water longer for less frequent watering, reducing grow pole maintenance.
Sphagnum Moss
Roots LOVE spag moss. Bio leaf's chosen a higher grade, long-strand spagmoss for their grow pole mix that provides all the same benefits of spagmoss along with holding the mix together better for filling vertical poles.
Spagmoss is a super fibrous substrate that holds plenty of water without sacrificing air space. Grow poles are typically filled with spag moss by itself, but when it dries out spag moss can become hydrophobic, repelling water. Adding spag moss mixed in with the other ingredients above and below creates happy roots without the higher maintenance.
Horticultural Charcoal
The over-waterers and worried-plant-parent's best friend! Chunks of horticultural charcoal helps increase aeration and adds drainage. Natural porosity holds on to necessary nutrients for aerial roots to access. Creates a more favourable environment for good bacteria and beneficial microbes. Helps balance pH.
Tree Fern Fibre
Adds fibres that roots love. Fern fibre is often used for filling grow poles with by itself, but can have high fall-out and dries out faster. Adding it in with this grow pole mix gives you the best of both worlds. The fibres roots love, without the mess.
