Bioleaf Premium Aroid and Hoya Potting Mix - Custom Blend - 5 litre
*Please note there's a limit of one 5 litre bag per order due to shipping costs - you can order more than one bag, however please place a separate order*
I really hate repotting. Until now. This mix is just a joy to work with. Nice and chunky. Much less mess. Easier clean-up. Also seriously good for my plants. Lucky things. Talk about spoiled. I see how people can get excited about substrate. I love it. My plants love it. Win win.
This is for the 5 litre size, enough to pot around 10 to 15 medium size plants depending on size (I recently potted about twelve 11cm pots from a 5 litre bag, using the 11cm clear Teku pots). I was potting up water-rooted cuttings with no existing soil, but when you're retaining some of the soil from the previous pot, one bag will obviously go a lot further, same if you're using smaller pots. As with any more natural, organic mix like this, it's best to buy small, get only what you need, and use fresh.
Which plants is it best for?
Formulated for Aroids and Hoya, making it suitable for all indoor plants that share the same preferences. That includes the many epiphytic plants (epiphytes being plants that climb up and grow on other plants), such as Hoyas, Orchids, Monstera, Philodendron, Pothos, Epipremnum... the list goes on!
If your plant's care calls for an airy, free-draining mix, or your plant prefers things moist to lightly moist, not damp or wet - or you just need to protect your plants from your tendency to over-water - this blend's for you (I also use it for my succulents and Peperomia also).
What's in the bag?
A chunky, airy, free-draining ratio of Orchid Bark, Pumice, Fern Fibre, Crushed Horticulture Charcoal and Worm Castings.
The benefits of orchid bark
An obvious inclusion if you consider what epiphytes like to attach to and grow on. This is a premium, export-quality grade orchid bark. Very clean and sterile. Minimal soil and dust. You can pre-soak if you want to, but it's not required at this level.
Some bark breaks down fast. This harder, slow-to-decompose premium grade lasts years. Nice and chunky. Helps keep soil aerated for precious oxygen to reach roots, resists compacting and provides drainage while also holding on to water for roots to take up as needed.
Why add pumice?
A natural, volcanic rock, pumice keeps its shape even when soaked in water, keeping soil loose. It adds aeration and improves drainage, keeping water moving to prevent substrate and plants becoming waterlogged. Naturally porous, pumice can hold water roughly twice as long as bark, releasing it slowly and steadily for the roots.
How does fern fibre help?
A superb growing medium for many indoor plants, with great results reported for aroids, hoya, orchids, ferns and other epiphytes. A natural, soft, airy, fibrous, long lasting material that contains a lot of air, and can retain a lot of water. As it holds water for longer than many other free-draining substrates, you won't have to water as often.
A great choice for indoor plants that prefer moist to lightly moist conditions, who don't like to fully dry out, and for those of us prone to forgetting to water, or who tend to water inconsistently. The fibrous nature distributes more even moisture throughout the pot due to natural capillary action.
Why add crushed horticultural charcoal?
Horticultural charcoal for plants, is different from activated charcoal that you might be familiar with for human health. This is the over-waterers and worried-plant-parent's best friend. Horticultural charcoal helps increase aeration and adds drainage to soil mixes for potted plants. Its natural porosity is also what helps charcoal hold on to necessary nutrients for roots to access. Horticultural charcoal also helps create a more favourable environment for good bacteria and beneficial microbes for healthier soil, and helps balance soil pH.
Why the fuss about worm castings?
It's a form of organic fertiliser, also known as vermicast, essentially odourless worm poo, which looks like fine, dry coffee grounds. It enriches the soil and adds beneficial microorganisms, something our plants miss out on being inside in pots.
Years of research at The Ohio State University Soil Ecology Laboratory, found worm castings help germination, foliage growth and flower production, as well as reduce plant diseases such as crown and root rot, and even inhibit pests, including mites, aphids and mealy bug.
"Brown gold!!! Best draining premix for hoyas & aroids there is on the market." @plant.obsessed.guy.nz
"I have purchased both the fine grade and standard grade Hoya & Aroid mix and all my plants are potted up and thriving - cannot fault it. Highly recommend!" Robert Wilson

Very happy with my purchase, very happy with the product information provided and very happy with the quick shipping and great packaging. Thanks!" Melayna Anderson
"By far the best customer care I've had in a long time. Website is such a wealth of information and the email with instructions for use after my purchase was fantastic. The pipette for measuring the correct amount was such a great inclusion, and the personalised message on the package was very cool. Definitely my go to shop for plant supplies now.
