Bioleaf Indoor Plant & Succulent Potting Mix - Custom Blend - FINE / MEDIUM - 5 litre
*Please note: Limit two 5 litre bags per order due to shipping weight. You can order more than two bags, however please place a separate order for the extra bag/s. You can add other items to the same order, limit only applies to the potting mix. Please note potting mix should be used in 30 days, so best to only get what you need, when you need it*
I really disliked repotting. Until now. This mix is a joy to work with. Less mess. Easier clean-up. Also seriously good for my plants. Lucky things. Talk about spoiled. I love it. My plants love it. Win win.
This is the same 'recipe' as the Bioleaf Aroid and Hoya Medium / Chunky Mix, but a Fine / Medium blend with smaller grade ingredients. This is for the 5 litre size, enough to pot around 8 to 15 medium size plants depending on pot size, and whether filling pots completely, or retaining some soil from the previous pot.
As with any more natural, organic mix like this, it's best to buy small, get only what you need, and use fresh. It's recommended to buy freshly made potting mix, and use it fresh within 30 days. This same blend is also available in a smaller 2 litre size if you're worried 5 litres is more than you need right away.
Which plants is it best for?
Superb for little guys, and big guys with little roots. Succulents, smaller plants with less established root systems, established plants with finer, more delicate roots, baby plants, seedlings and for propagating. Also superb when first potting-up water propagated cuttings. In general, go for this mix if the plant is small, starting out, or established but roots are fine and delicate.
I love this mix for soil propagation and shifting water propagated cuttings to soil. I'm getting great results from my finer-root and shallow-rooted, established plants, too, including my String of Turtles, Chain of Hearts, String of Pearls, Peperomia in general (as that genus tends to have more shallow, finer root systems) and Pink Bubbles.
What's in the bag?
A fine, airy, free-draining mix of fine Orchid Bark, fine Pumice, Fern Fibre, Crushed Horticulture Charcoal and Worm Castings. NO slow-release fertiliser. Fertilise and use rooting hormones or growth boosters as normal.
The benefits of orchid bark
An obvious inclusion if you consider what epiphytes like to attach to and grow on. A premium, export-quality, fine grade orchid bark. Very clean and sterile. Minimal soil or dust. You can pre-soak, but it's not required at this level. Some bark breaks down fast. This harder, slow-to-decompose premium grade lasts years. Helps keep soil aerated for oxygen to reach roots, resists compacting and provides drainage while also holding on to water for roots to take up as needed.
Why add pumice?
A natural, volcanic rock that keeps its shape even when soaked in water, keeping soil loose. Adds aeration and improves drainage. Keeps water moving to prevent substrate and plants becoming waterlogged. Naturally porous. Pumice holds water roughly twice as long as bark, releasing it slowly and steadily for the roots.
How does fern fibre help?
Superb growing medium for many indoor plants. Great results reported for aroids, hoya, orchids, ferns and other epiphytes. A natural, soft, airy, fibrous, long lasting material containing a lot of air. Can retain a lot of water. As it holds water for longer than many free-draining substrates, you won't have to water as often. Ideal for indoor plants that prefer moist to lightly moist conditions, who don't like to fully dry out. Fibrous nature distributes more even moisture throughout the pot due to natural capillary action.
Why add crushed horticultural charcoal?
Horticultural charcoal for plants is different from activated charcoal that you might be familiar with for human health. This is the over-waterers and worried-plant-parent's best friend. Horticultural charcoal helps increase aeration and adds drainage to soil mixes for potted plants. Its natural porosity helps charcoal hold on to necessary nutrients for roots to access. Horticultural charcoal also helps create a more favourable environment for good bacteria and beneficial microbes for healthier soil, and helps balance soil pH.
Why the fuss about worm castings?
It's a form of organic fertiliser, also known as vermicast, essentially odourless worm poo, which looks like fine, dry coffee grounds. It enriches the soil and adds beneficial microorganisms, something our plants miss out on being inside in pots. Years of research at The Ohio State University Soil Ecology Laboratory, found worm castings help germination, foliage growth and flower production, as well as reduce plant diseases such as crown and root rot, and even inhibit pests, including mites, aphids and mealy bug.
