Yes, it's true. The much loved Bio Leaf potting mixes will no longer be produced after November 2023. Although natural, organic potting mixes like Bio Leaf are best potted up within 30 days to get the most benefit for your plants, you can stock up and store it for 3 months in good conditions. Store in a cool, dry place indoors. Avoid direct sunlight and high humidity. When ready to use, dampen then mix well as it will have settled when stored.
Why Bio Leaf?
Unpopular opinion incoming. I really dislike repotting. Until now. This mix is a joy to work with. Less mess. Easier clean-up. Also seriously good for my plants. Lucky things. Talk about spoiled. I love it. My plants love it. Win win.
This is the same 'recipe' as the Bio Leaf Aroid and Hoya Medium / Chunky Mix, but a Fine / Medium blend with smaller grades of ingredients. This is for the 2 litre size, enough to pot 4 to 8 medium size plants depending on pot size (and whether filling pots completely or retaining soil from the previous pot). I get 3 to 5 x 11cm pots from a 2 litre.
As with any more natural, organic mix like this, best to buy small, get only what you need, and use fresh. Buy freshly made potting mix and use fresh within 30 days. Also available in 5 litre size.
Which plants is it best for?
This is a superb, all-purpose, indoor houseplant mix. The best choice when you want 'one for everyone'. Especially suited to younger, less established plants. Plants in smaller pots with shallower root systems. And for plants you don't want to water constantly, or that dry out too fast, as although still light and free-draining, this finer mix retains a little more moisture than medium or chunkier grades. This is also my go to for shifting water propagated cuttings to soil when ready to pot-up.
What's in the bag?
A finer-grade, airy, free-draining mix of fine Orchid Bark, fine Pumice, Fern Fibre, Crushed Horticulture Charcoal and the Bio Leaf Bioactive Blend. NO slow-release fertiliser. You can fertilise and use rooting hormones or growth boosters as normal.
What you can't see
As well as the chunky goodies you can see, Bio Leaf also includes a proprietary Bioactive Blend that promotes a healthy microbial population of beneficial, miniature soil microorganisms, creating a foundation for your plant that's closer to nature.
The non-plant-geek version? Although too tiny to see with the naked eye, Bio Leaf creates an ideal environment for tiny soil super heroes to set up home, helping increase nutrient availability to plants, reducing the risk of deficiencies and helping detoxify soil.
Why orchid bark?
Premium, export-quality, fine grade orchid bark. Very clean and sterile. Minimal soil or dust. Some types of bark break down fast. This harder, slow-to-decompose premium grade lasts years. Helps keep soil aerated for oxygen to reach roots, resists compacting and provides drainage while also holding on to water for roots to take up as needed.
A natural, volcanic rock that keeps its shape even when soaked in water, keeping soil loose. Adds aeration and improves drainage. Keeps water moving to prevent substrate and plants becoming waterlogged. Naturally porous. Pumice holds water roughly twice as long as bark, releasing it slowly and steadily for the roots. Superior to perlite.
Why fern fibre?
Great results reported for aroids, hoya, orchids, ferns and other epiphytes. A natural, soft, airy, fibrous, long lasting material containing a lot of air. Can retain a lot of water. Holds water longer than many other free-draining substrates, so you won't have to water as often. Ideal for indoor plants that prefer moist to lightly moist conditions, who don't like to fully dry out. Fibrous nature distributes more even moisture throughout the pot due to natural capillary action.
Why horticultural charcoal?
Horticultural charcoal for plants is different from activated charcoal that you might be familiar with for human use. This is the over-waterers and worried-plant-parent's best friend. Horticultural charcoal helps increase aeration and adds drainage to soil mixes for potted plants. Its natural porosity is also what helps charcoal hold on to necessary nutrients for roots to access. Horticultural charcoal also helps create a more favourable environment for good bacteria and beneficial microbes for healthier soil, and helps balance soil pH.
"Brown gold!!! Best draining premix for hoyas & aroids there is on the market." @plant.obsessed.guy.nz
"I have purchased both the fine grade and standard [chunky] grade Hoya & Aroid mix and all my plants are potted up and thriving - cannot fault it. Highly recommend!" Robert Wilson
*Please note this is also called 'Bio Leaf Aroid Fine' if comparing to other sellers*
I purchased fine grade hoyas & aroid mix for my prayer plant & Calathea orbifolias & they seem to be loving it. I've just purchased some more. I would highly recommend!...
Purchased this for my string of pearls cuttings this time, and they’re doing really well!
I was so excited to recant soil. I have never bought a good soil for my indoor plants. This soil is so so so good! I have used it to plant multiple of my new house plants.
Really like using this mix. Highly recommend it
These potting mixes are my go-to. I love that I can buy a small amount, so there’s no waste and my plant babies love it!
