Reviews for HB-101

"The plants are responding to the HB-101... they look richer in colour and have put on new growth. Very easy to use, odourless, and have experienced no fertiliser burn." @oregonian

"I tested three [plant growth enhancer] products starting the week of June 6. At the end of July I was surprised to see one plant was significantly ahead of the others. The HB-101 resulted in a taller, fuller plant that flowered and set fruit sooner than the plants fed with the other products." Jodi Torpey, writer for Find Gardening

"My plants are very happy with this product and you need so little of it that it's worth the expense." @mairc

"You need to be extremely careful with the dilution measurements. I bought this for my bonsai tree and had an over fertilization scare for a week. Once you get the measurements down, the product is great! It seems like it did wonders for my tree and even though the bottle is small, a little goes a long way." @amencoop

"I have been using HB-101 for about a year and a half and I am afraid to stop because I am getting more blooms, better growth, and less insect and disease problems because the plants just appear overall healthier. Growth rate was so accelerated... In the beginning, I damaged a lot of roots until I finally figured out how much to use. I currently use four drops per gallon [4 drops per 4.5 litres] and the only thing I can say is that something is working. Since I cannot determine what, I plan to continue using it." Senior member of the Mid Lakes Orchid Society, Florida.

What HB-101 is not

Let's get this cleared up right from the start. Do not confuse HB-101 for a fertiliser. Reading up about it online it's a common misconception. It is not a fertiliser. And it does not replace your fertiliser. HB-101 is a supplement. A best-selling supplement from Japan that boosts growth and plant health, but still, just a supplement, not a complete food. Think of it as a growth booster or growth enhancer for your plants. It supplements but does not replace fertiliser.

100% natural. Certified for organic use.

HB-101 is OMRI-listed (Organic Materials Review Institute), for use in certified organic production. HB-101 is all natural with no chemicalsIt was developed in Japan 30 years ago from a combined 400 years of forestry knowledge and experience, created as a natural method to heal and improve sick and weak trees. From there, word got out, It caught on in crops, vegetable gardens, Bonsai, Orchids, and eventually us indoor plant hobbyists caught on too.

Made from trees & bananas.

Okay, it's not quite that basic, but in essence that's what's in HB-101. Trees and bananas. Cypress, Pine and Cedar to be exact, plus Plantain (plantain are like bananas on steroids, none of that soft sugary sweetness).

Being all natural, the colour and scent of each batch varies slightly. To me it smells like fresh pine mixed with a slightly woody scent. A bit like a walk through a pine forest just after it's rained, mixed with Christmas Day. With such high dilution rates though, once diluted there's no scent.

Why Cypress, Pine and Cedar?

So why those particular trees? Some trees are thought to have the potential to be immortal. Big claim I know. Cypress, Pine and Cedar all make the list for some of the longest-living trees.

Some of them even have names. Methuselah is a Great Basin Bristlecone Pine (Pinus longaeva), who lives in the White Mountains of California. Measured by ring count to be 4,852 years old. Another is The Cypress of Abarkuh, a Mediterranean cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) in Iran, estimated to be between 2,000 and 5,000 years old.

One thing the longest living species of trees have in common is very long-life stem cells. Stem cells can repair injury and regenerate, crucial for new cell growth. HB-101 is a blend of natural extracts from these plants and trees, refined and blended to a super concentrated level in a Japanese recipe created from more than 400 years of natural plant care knowledge. That's why so many reviews say 'a little goes a long way'. It really is super concentrated. The dose is a miniscule 1 to 2 drops per 1 litre.

Why bananas?

So that helps explain the trees, but why plaintain? If you're picturing a big banana right now, you'd be on the right track. Plantains are part of the banana family, but among other benefits, are much richer in Potassium than bananas. There's up to 500mg per 100gms of Potassium in plantain, versus around 350mg in bananas.

Plant hobbyists also use HB-101 for the boost in Calcium and Magnesium levels, as a lot of fertilisers lack those two essential micro-nutrients, which in the case of calcium, can result in irreversible deficiencies (as calcium is not a mobile nutrient that a plant can shift to where it's needed when there's a shortage).

HB-101 directions & dose

Check the full HB-101 directions and dose guide as that gives you the dose per litre for everything from general maintenance to hydroponics and foliar feeding, from  transplanting and repotting to seedlings.

Depending on the plant's needs and how you are applying HB-101, the dose is from 1 to 3 drops per litre. Take care not to overdose or guess it. It's very concentrated. A little goes a long way. The starter 6ml size has a built-in dropper, and I include a pipette free with the 50ml and 100ml sizes.

Personally I find the 'how to use' a bit confusing on the label (as it gives you the dose in ratios, between 1:1,000 to 1:100,00), so definitely best to refer to the HB-101 directions which explains it in simple terms.

At the 1 drop per litre dose, you can use it every time you water, so because you water more when it's warmer, that means your plants will get naturally more HB-101 in summer and less in winter. Remember not to stop using your normal fertiliser though. HB-101 is not a fertiliser, it's a supplement focused on growth.

How long does it last?

Based on 1 to 3 drops per litre (1 drop being 0.05mls):

6ml starter size of HB-101 makes approx. 40 to 120 litres

50ml of HB-101 makes approx. 330 to 1,000 litres

100ml of HB-101 makes approx. 650 to 2,000 litres

HB-101 = 5 to 16 cents per litre

The price varies based on what size HB-101 you choose, but based on the best-selling size (50ml for $50), that's 5 to 16 cents per litre based 1 to 3 drops per litre.

How does it compare to others?

It feels mean to compare products this way, as cost per litre doesn't tell you product quality or results, but based on the plant foods and growth boosters I stock, there's everything from 30 to 40+ cents per litre (Yates Thrive and Groconut are around this level), to under 20 cents a litre (Plant Runner's just below that), down to under 10 cents per litre (Dyna-Gro is down at that level), so HB-101 sits at the middle to lower end.

That just compares each product's 'general maintenance' level and the current (May '21) prices for their best selling sizes to make it (somewhat) simpler to do the math. Not 100% accurate, but close enough to help get your head around the costs. Now my head hurts ;)

Not that I'm saying you should be pinching pennies when it comes to something as important as looking after our indoor plants health - not at all - but comparing various fertilisers, tonics and growth boosters based only on the price per bottle or pack can be misleading if you don't check the dose. If you did compare based on buy price alone - no-one would buy HB-101 - until you check the cost per litre. Then wow.

At the 30 to 40 cents per litre level, Thrive for example is a superb price. Cheap-as-chips to buy at around $15 for 500ml. Groconut too, around $19 for 45grams. Plant Runner's around $19 per 100ml, then Dyna-Gro is up a level again, around $25 for  their bigger 250ml - but that's nothing compared to HB-101 at around $50 for 50ml.

But it's quite a different kettle of fish when you look at the cost every time you water though huh?! Wow.
