Hidehisa Indoor Plant Shears - Small - White
World famous
I'm proud to bring the world renowned Hidehisa Shears, from Toyama Hamono in Japan, to New Zealand indoor plant hobbyists. Fire forged and still made by hand to this day, combining the traditional methods of Japanese Sword (Katana) making, with the precision of modern engineering.
Hidehisa are made from Japanese Steel using techniques passed down from the founders' ancestors in Sanjo, a blacksmithing town, dating back to 1861. They've been hand-making secateurs and shears for over 160 years and gained a reputation throughout Japan for excellent in gardening shears.
Since then, Hidehisa have become famous worldwide, winning multiple design and performance awards, exhibiting at the Chelsea Flower Show in London, and all the while, adored by indoor plant hobbyists the world over for their beautiful design, pleasure of use, and performance.
The Hidehisa Indoor Plant Shears
These are the small Hidehisa Indoor Plant Shears in White. There are two sizes in this design. These are the smaller size of the two (also called Mini), measuring 14cm long by 8cm at the widest point across the handle, with a 6cm blade length. I've always called them 'butterfly shears' after their gorgeous handle design.
This is the perfect size for me (my hand size is in-between small and medium), as I find a lot of other shears and scissors are too big and bulky (for larger hands and tougher jobs, have a look at the Hidehisa Indoor Shears size large). These have the most incredibly smooth action. Effortless to use. You barely need to move your hand or apply any pressure. Such a lovely weight in the hand too. Only 82 grams. Not heavy by any means, but still with that lovely solidness of quality Japanese Steel.
This model is designed for indoor plants, general garden use and light pruning, up to 10mm diameter branches. Being the smaller size, this model is well suited for close-up, delicate, exact work for indoor plants and floristry, such as Philodendron, Pothos, Orchids and Bonsai. Very sharp cut for clean, accurate cuts for trimming, tidy-ups and propagating.
These are really something extra special. A gift to treasure for a loved one, or to spoil yourself.
What your shears come with
Your Hidehisa Shears come complete with a black, metallic-embossed box, authenticity and care documents, in a protective fabric storage case (as shown in the photos).
Why are Hidehisa so prized?
Fire forged
Japanese steel (hagane), becomes even tougher by heating it to a very high temperature and applying pressure. This is the same steel used for Japanese swords (katana). In the past, fire forging was heavy labour that required the skill of the master holding a red-heated buillion with gold chopsticks in one hand, gavel or mallet in the other.
Although the form of work has changed in modern blacksmithing, traditional techniques are still used. There is an optimum temperature for each method of heating steel at different stages to achieve the degree of perfection and strength expected from a Hidehisa tool. Hidehisa blacksmiths use all 5 senses to achieve this level of perfection.
Back sharpened
Traditionally, it is the back of the blade not the surface, that is the heart of the scissors. This is where the term 'cut on the back' originates. The sharpness of shears is greatly affected by the sharpening of the back, not the front surface. This method of sharpening requires skill and experience, passed down from generation to generation.
Balance and award-winning design
There's a pure joy that comes from using tools at this level. It turns caring for plants into a pleasure. Maintenance becomes joyful. The ease of use, the smoothness of Hidehisa in action, and the perfect balance in the hand, all proof of the skill of the craftsmen.
Reviews for Hidehisa
"I am a serious gardener. Having the right tool makes any job easier. I've had many different types of pruners and these are the best by far. These pruners are serious business and I recommend them unreservedly. They have maintained their fine edge. A sound tool is a thing of great beauty!" Melissa Chase
"Beautiful craftsmanship! I bought this for my wife so she could have a set at least similar to a pair I have that were given to me by my Japanese grandmother 30 years ago. These were just as well made and I was equally impressed and proud to give them as a gift. Stop buying the cheap crap they sell in the chain stores and wasting your money! Buy the last shears you will ever own!" Craig Landolt
"I waited to replace my inexpensive gardening tools but it was worth every penny to replace with tools from Japan made by companies with integrity. I love tools specifically suited to a job and invented by someone in the know of what it takes to get the job done. They are quality all the way. Highly recommend." Verified Amazon buyer
"These are very well made shears... I'll never buy the cheap quality shears again." @siol
How to care for your Hidehisa shears
Hidehisa are very sharp and most definitely not for use by children (even when supervised). Care should be taken at all times. They are designed for cutting indoor plants, garden plants and flowers to approximately 8mm to 10mm (not for hard wood or thicker branches). Start off using your shears on softer, thinner stems first to get familiar with use.
Always wipe clean after every use, and store in a dry location, indoors, away from humidity and moisture. Steel tools will rust if stored dirty, wet or in high humidity. If putting away to store, lightly oil blades before storage (using scissor, knife, sewing machine or blade oil). Never cut wire or plastic with your Hidehisa shears or you may notch or damage the blade edge.
There are also detailed care instructions included in the box with your new shears.
Hand made. Perfectly imperfect.
Being made by hand, Hidehisa shears have slight differences and imperfections, minor surface marks, dents and blemishes. These in no way impact use, and are a sign of the craftsmen who made your tool. Do not expect machine-made perfection in appearance (just perfection in use).
